Simple Fall Decorations: Fill Lanterns With Pumpkins
I’m starting to decorate our porch for fall.
It’s definitely my favorite time of year here in Westchester, NY!
The fall foliage is just stunning, and the temperatures are perfect.
I already showed you the easy fall wreath I made for my front door. I took a spring wreath and updated it to make it work for fall.
Today I wanted to share an idea for simple fall decorations for outside or inside: fill lanterns with pumpkins and pine cones and similar small fall items.
I like to work with what I already have, to spend as little as possible, and I love finding treasures in thrift stores. I bought these two lanterns at Goodwill a while ago.
The only problem as you can see: they have a white tree in them that lights up, so they are clearly meant for winter or Christmas decor.

Here are lanterns I love:
and now I’ll show you an easy way to update them so you can use them for your fall decor.
From previous years, I already had all of these little orange and golden pumpkins,
fall potpourri, faux fall leaves, and I decided to pile them into the lanterns to hide the trees.
Just use what you already have — or pick up a lot of pine cones in your neighborhood.
I actually added acorns that I’ve been collecting when we are waiting for my son’s school bus in the morning.
I had to work around hiding the plastic trees, but by using the leaves first and then piling on the little pumpkins and pine cones, etc., I hid the trees, filled the lanterns, and closed the door.
Your lantern might not have anything like the plastic tree inside of it, which make this update even easier.
So instead of not being able to use my lanterns for this season, I was able to update them so I could make them part of my fall decor this year.
I’m looking forward to showing you how I decorated my whole home for fall!
