5-Minute DIY Shutters With Fence Pickets for Our Cottage

DIY shutters in just five minutes? That’s impossible, you probably think.

A couple of days ago, I blogged about the eight weathered fence pickets I bought at the Country Living Fair and promised to show you what I made out of them.

DIY Shutters Made With Fence Pickets

I had been wrecking my brain about how to use them best — do I attach them to a bench to create a kind of chair, do I nail them together and make a large piece of farmhouse decor wall art out of it for our living room…

But then it came to me: maybe they would look cute as “shutters” for our Blue Cottage! I have been wanting shutters for our windows for a while.

I wasn’t sold on the idea, and I didn’t want to nail them into the siding of our house — which is actually a concrete product that looks like wood siding, and it’s really hard to get nails into it.

So instead of nails, I used one of my favorite DIY items: Command Picture Hanging Strips.*

I should buy stock in that company, that’s how many I buy of these and how often they come in handy.

I now usually avoid nails altogether and use these Command strips with Velco to hang up pictures and other decor. I recently used them to attach two vintage washboards to the wall in our kitchen.

How did I add DIY shutters to our house in just minutes?

All I did was put two Command Strips together, attach one on the bottom and one to the top of the fence picket, peel off the back of the top sticker, and then glue the fence picket next to the window.

I wish I would have had one more per side to make the shutters wider, but on the other hand this is just a “suggestion” of a shutter. They are also too short to be real shutters, so I simply embraced that fact.

I was reaching out to my Instagram friends while I was making these DIY shutters because I wasn’t sure if I had lost it or if this was a pretty cute idea, and the response was positive.
