IKEA Bedroom Makeover
If you have ever visited our home, you’d notice what big IKEA fans we are. We have IKEA furniture and home decor everywhere.
And, by the way, we might have about 10 IKEA plush friends.
We mostly had antique furniture in the house I grew up in in Germany, but also some IKEA furniture, and I lived just 20 minutes away from an IKEA store in Burbank, CA, for years.
I love shopping there so much that I even wrote a whole post about how to get the best deals at IKEA.
Since I moved a lot — 10 times in 20 years — I bought many small furniture, storage containers, and kitchen items from IKEA, and we’ve bought more since we moved to New York, like the awesome sofa table we use for storage and our shoes.
When we moved into the Blue Cottage, my little son used my old twin IKEA bed, but he outgrew it.
You can see it here in a post about what his room looked like before the makeover, and why I chose to paint it turquoise.
To make a long story short, I contacted IKEA Paramus, NJ, where we shop all the time to see if they wanted to work on an IKEA bedroom makeover, and they were game. Yay!

This makeover has been in the work for a long time, and I’m so excited to show you the result.
First of all, the most exciting part was that the IKEA furniture were delivered and assembled for me!
After schlepping and assembling IKEA furniture the last 20+ years, moving them 10 times and decorating with them in the next place, I didn’t have to do anything this time except for signing off on the delivery and assembly.
I can not tell you what a luxury that was to me.
Did you know that IKEA not only offers delivery of their products but also an assembly service? My niece didn’t know and struggled for hours to put together a bed.
It’s so worth the cost of delivery and assembly, especially when it comes to furniture like this BRIMNES bed I decided on. It has four large drawers under the bed, and a slatted base the mattress sits on that also needs to be put together.Since this bed is so affordable, it’s wise to spring for the assembly charge.
The two gentlemen that delivered everything I had ordered put everything together in less than two hours — the bed, the slatted bed base, the desk, and even the rolling cart I’ll show you in a second.
I decided on this full-sized bed for him because of the extra storage (we are accessing the two drawers on the other side by lifting up the slats and thin mattress to store things we only need a few times a year) and the fact that it doesn’t have a footboard.
I figure this way he can use this bed for a long time because his feet can hang over the bed if need be, plus I was worried that his friends or he could get hurt if they fall on a footboard that sticks up if they are roughhousing around.
Right now the bed doesn’t have a headboard. I’m thinking of hanging a vintage door on the wall to serve as a headboard once I find one, or I can add the IKEA headboard with storage compartments that’s designed for this bed. It’s nice to have that option down the road.
My son’s favorite color is orange, so I chose the TUVBRÄCKA duvet cover for his bed.
The banner, the bedside table, and the three green rolling storage boxes in front of the bed are IKEA products we already owned.
Right now my favorite tree in the yard is blooming and looks so pretty through the big window.
This is the other side of L’s room. I bought the white TV stand all put together from the clearance section for just $32 at IKEA three years ago.
When I saw it, I knew it would be perfect to store all of Landon’s LEGO creations and would fit nicely under the big window.
Here are my son’s new LINNMON/ALEX desk, RÅSKOG rolling cart, FORMAT lamp, and RISSLA desk pad.
This desk is totally customizable: you can choose the legs, the color, and the storage options. Plus it’s so affordable — only $116!
I decided to stay with white but wanted a darker color for the top. To prevent it being colored on or scratched up, I also ordered the black desk pad.
We had used a little IKEA table as a desk for L before, so this is his first big boy desk he’ll have for a long time.
It’s so nice that he has all that storage, and if we want to, we can add more drawers on the other side eventually. The red chair is also from IKEA, but L has had it for several years now.
This black bookcase is — you guessed it — from IKEA as well. We’ve had this one for years.
I’ve loved this turquoise cart since IKEA first revealed it. L has so many LEGOS and Playmobil toys that I’m thrilled with any extra storage, and the fact that the cart is mobile is even better.
I bought two rugs for Landon’s room and couldn’t decide with one I liked better. I shot most of the pictures with the turquoise rug, but here is the other option.
I’d love your input — do you like this one better?
This one is an indoor/outdoor rug and it’s not as soft as the other one, but more durable. The white is an off-white, and I personally like the white stripes of the other rug better, but I prefer the orange and the pattern of this one.
The room makeover is not quite done yet. Can you guess which furniture piece I’m going to paint orange with Amy Howard chalk paint I also used for our cabinet?
I hope you enjoyed this tour of the IKEA bedroom makeover of Landon’s room!
Landon is thrilled with it, and I love that we can add even more storage to both the bed and the desk if we want to.
IKEA furniture and storage items are such a great option for a kids bedroom because they are affordable, pretty, colorful, and versatile.
I hope you’re lucky enough to have an IKEA store near you — make sure to take advantage of their yummy food in the restaurant and buy some of their chocolate bars!– or check them out online.
