Enjoy this tutorial to make DIY Crayon Hearts out of broken crayons!
Make them for Valentine’s Day or just for fun because you have too many broken crayons in the house.
Why not upcycle crayon pieces instead of throwing them out, right?
Simply melt them into these cute hearts, or any other shape you can find molds for, and then the kids can use them again.
They make the perfect gift for kids for Valentine’s Day.
I like that fact that when the kids actually draw with them, they will draw with rainbows of color because of how the colors all melt together, unless you make a point to only use one kind of color for every heart.

Crayon Hearts Tutorial
These are the items you will need to make upcycled crayon hearts.
Crayon Hearts Supplies:
- Heart-shaped aluminum or silicone mold (my silicone mold is from Ikea and the aluminum one from a thrift store)
- About 30+ crayons
- Cutting board (or plastic placemat)
- Large knife
- Large bowl with water
- Paper and glue gun with glue sticks, or glue dots if you want to make the Valentine’s cards
You’ll need about 30 crayons to make 20 crayon hearts. That’s how many I was able to make with the mold I used.
Tutorial:
- Let the crayons soak in water for about 15 minutes.
- The most time-consuming part of this project is taking off the crayon wrappers. If you know of a technique that doesn’t mess up your nails, let me know. Someone in the comments mentioned using a utility knife to cut off the wrappers
- Heat the oven to 230 degrees and dry off the crayons, then cut them into little pieces on the cutting board.
- Fill the molds with the crayon pieces and put them into the oven.
- Once the pieces melt a little bit, after about 10 minutes, carefully add more crayon pieces to every heart to make them bigger.
- Once the crayons have completely melted, take out the mold(s) and let them cool down completely.
I used an aluminum mold for one batch and a silicon form for the other.
I turned over the aluminum tray and banged it on the table, and the hearts popped out.
The hearts from the silicone form came out fine as well once I popped them out individually, but they are not as shiny as the ones from the aluminum mold. I actually prefer those hearts.
You could use or gift the crayon hearts individually or go a step further to glue them to these Valentine’s cards.
I used this free template to print out Valentine’s cards the heart fit on perfectly and glued it to the center with my glue gun.
If it pops off, glue it down with Elmer glue or glue dots. The glue dots will only work if your hearts are pretty flat on the back, which mine were not.
Enjoy making these crayon hearts! Your kids can help you with several of the steps, so this makes a nice craft project for the whole family.
I like that the kids can see how to reuse their broken crayons into something useful and pretty again.
