I named our house the Blue Cottage for a reason.
I called it a cottage because it’s small. Not Manhattan apartment small, but small because there’s three of us and we happen to have a lot of things that need to fit into a house.
Okay, so I’m a bit of a furniture and home decor hoarder. And boxes full of vintage dishes, DIY supplies, interior design magazines, every letter and card I’ve received in the last 20 years, and Landon’s first clothes.
Plus, between the three of us we probably own 400 books.
I love our house, but it doesn’t have a basement or a garage — not even a shed. And Don being a finish carpenter and contractor, he doesn’t have space for all of his saws, tools, and supplies.
Things were always piling up on our porch, to the point where I installed curtains to keep the rain off of all the things that were stored there so they wouldn’t get ruined.
Since we moved in 2 1/2 years ago, I couldn’t wait to get a shed.
And I got my wish! BuildDirect emailed me and wanted to collaborate — and guess what the first thing was I mentioned I’d love to do? Build one of the fabulous sheds they offer!
They offer adorable sheds like this 6′ x 6′ Wooden Cedar Shed. How cute is this?
But we needed something larger, and I ended up ordering the EnduraShed Storage Sheds – Lifestyle Series, 7.5’x7.5′ Gable Shed — which works perfectly for the spot we had and gives us plenty of extra space for Don’s tools, gardening supplies, and seasonal items.
DIY Shed Adds Extra Storage Space to Our Blue Cottage
This shed is a kit that can be assembled by two people. Don built the foundation, and then I helped him assemble the DIY shed on it. It was fun to work on this together.
It took us two days, but you can build this in a day. It does help to have a carpenter as a husband — and someone who has some muscles on him to get those screws through the metal.
The kit comes with one kind of screw, so you don’t have a dozen different ones to keep track of, and EdgeSAFE rolled safety edges, which helps with handling the pieces during assembly.
It was really cold the first day we worked on the shed, so we were all bundled up.
I was so thrilled to “move in” after we built it! We put a carpet and an extra table into it that had been sitting on the porch, gardening tools, and some of Don’s tools.
Don is going to build durable shelves for his tools and supplies so we can maximize the extra storage room. We’ll have this filled in no time.
Our backyard still needs so much help, but I’m loving this addition, and of course I had to decorate it a bit with the plant boxes.
Instead of storing the vintage sleds in the shed, I decided to put them on top of each other and add a planter on them.
Spring is just around the corner, and we’ll paint the base of the shed, grow grass around it, and I’ll probably add some potted plants. Or I might put my container garden right next to the shed this years.
I’m so thrilled to have this extra space, you have no idea!
