Not Me! Monday — Dagmar’s Frugalitis

by Dagmar on December 21, 2009

Landon working hard as a snow plow...

Attention, this Not Me! Monday post also serves as one of my frugal posts.

I did not go to CVS to return some supplements, only to buy the same ones back — to save $16.44! No, not me!

This is what happened — frugal folks, take note: A week ago, I bought two bottles of glucosamine/condroitin supplements at CVS where the deal was that you get the second bottle for half off. That’s a good deal, considering how expensive those supplements are. But I know that CVS sometimes has an ever better 2-for-1 deal, so I decided to return the two bottles I had bought.

As I always do when I walk into CVS, I first go to their coupon-spitter-outer box and scanned my CVS rewards card. And wouldn’t you know it — it printed a $5 off of $15 coupon. It was only good for three days, so I immediately looked around for items I need all the time anyway (toilet paper, etc.) to take advantage of that deal.

I ended up in the vitamin/supplement aisle. And what do I see? They were having that 2-for-1 offer on the glucosamine supplements! I looked around for the best deal — there are so many different amounts of pills in these bottles that you really have to do the math to figure out which one is the best offer — and the kind I had bought previously was still the cheapest.

So I certainly did not walk up to the register and asked the lady to refund me the money for the initial purchase ($38.23). I did not then ask if it was okay to buy the same two bottles back. The sale price of those came to 26.79, and I absolutely did not ask the lady to apply the $5 off coupon to this order, bringing the price down to $21.79. Not me! That means I just saved $16.44! And even more impressive: these two bottles usually retail for $50.98, so I really saved $29.19 on those two bottles.

I was able to save a lot of money today while getting what I needed. Anyone can do this, you just have to watch out for deals and be smart about when to buy certain products. Call me crazy, but after frugal deals like this I feel like I just got paid for my job as a mom. Yes, I don’t bring home as much money as my husband, but I know how to stretch our hard-earned money so skillfully that I am able to stay home with Landon and do the work that I love as a freelancer editor and blogger.
