Mommy Bloggers Luncheon in New York City

by Dagmar on November 22, 2009

I get invited to a lot of blogging-related events, and even though I say no to most of them because I am either not interested or don’t have the time to be away from home for that long, I was invited to Breathe Life In and attended a luncheon by Vicks the other day. Vicks wants to introduce its new innovations to the public just in time for cold, cough, and flu season — especially to moms, since we are the caretakers of the family and can’t afford to be out of commission with a cold or the flu! Not much gets done if mom is sick!

So this Monday, I was picked up by a car and whisked off to Fifth Avenue in New York City. Since I didn’t have to drive and had time to relax, I took my favorite new book with me — David Mathison’s Be The Media. Right now I am reading his chapter on using the Internet to your advantage. After learning some more about optimizing SEO, I took a few pictures on the way.

The intimate luncheon was held at the beautiful Spa Chakra on Fifth. There were only 10 other mommy bloggers who attended this event, and it was a lot fun to meet them and exchange information on our blogging adventures and ventures.

Here is a picture of most of us and a few Vicks representatives who gave the presentation.

Even the cough syrup looked fabulous!

. . . while three ladies from Vicks — the global manager, the principal scientist at Procter and Gamble, and a pharmacist — gave us some background information on the common cold. Vicks has been researching colds and the flu for over 100 years and Vicks products are sold in 70 countries! I remember my mom using VapoRub on my chest when I had a cold when I was little.

Did you know that most colds last five to seven days and that most adults have about five of them in a year? This means that we spend three years of our life coughing and sneezing by the time we are 75 years old!

Every person’s immune system reacts differently to cold and flu viruses, and Vicks aims to identify the needs of consumers and come up with remedies that help all kinds of symptoms to make having a cold or the flu as comfortable as possible. They now have a Less Drowsy NyQuil formula that doesn’t taste as bitter and a new VapoSyrup that loosens mucus and opens your airway. In total they have six new products on the market right now.

Vicks is an official member of the Global Coalition Against Childhood Pneumonia and has partnered with Save the Children to help deliver treatment to children with pneumonia. Vicks was part of the first World Pneumonia Day (November 2) in an effort to bring awareness to this illness, which is the leading cause of death in the world for children age five and under.

I left with a bag full of Vicks cold medicine. I personally swear by taking homeopathic remedies and a lot of vitamins if I feel a cold coming on, but if I still catch one, it’s nice to know that I have enough cough syrup for the next five years! Remember that cold, cough, or flu medicine is not recommended for children who are 12 years old or younger. Always ask your doctor and pharmacist for more information, especially when it comes to your children.

I had a very fun-filled day and had time to read some more on the way home, see? This was my kind of day :)
