How Long Did You Breastfeed? Why Did You Stop?

This picture was taken this weekend. Landon had so much fun at the ocean — and a quick snack before he ran off to play in the sand with his cousins some more!

I have been breastfeeding Landon now for 2 years, 8 months and 2 weeks — and my little boy and I don’t have any intention to stop. I love it, he loves it. I don’t get tired of giving him the comfort and nourishment he needs and wants, and feeling that little body close to me. And as I always point out, it’s the best diet I’ve ever been on!

My family and extended family went through a phase where they were questioning my decision to keep breastfeeding him past the first year and then, oh my!, past the second years, but I don’t hear any inquiries about it anymore.

They know I’ll do what I think is right for him and me anyway :) Smart people. The health benefits alone are enough reason to keep doing it until Landon self-weans.

After my wonderful experience with it, I have become a passionate advocate for breastfeeding — a lactivist — and want to inspire and encourage as many moms as possible to start and continue to breastfeed. That is a major reason why I started this blog, Dagmar’s momsense.

No matter how long you choose to breastfeed — one week or four years — I want to be a resource and cheerleader for all new mothers because I believe most women can nurse their child with the right encouragement and support, of which there isn’t enough out there.

I’m always sad when I hear other moms say they succumbed to societal pressure or their own uncomfortable thoughts about (extended) breastfeeding. I’m curious: how long did YOU breastfeed — three days, one month, ten months? And why did you stop — did you have problems with breastfeeding? Did you think it was time? Why?

I’d love to hear from as many of you as possible so I can write articles that address the most common reasons for moms to stop breastfeeding. Please leave a comment here. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

And while you are here, subscribe to my blog for future articles about breastfeeding, attachment parenting, natural birth, green and frugal living, and my life as a mother, wife, and entrepreneur in Westchester, New York.

I’m still nursing my second at almost 17 months. I don’t really know when we will stop. I never really thought about it before. I just kind of take it one day at a time. There are days when he nurses 3-4 times and then others when he only nurses before bed. I have noticed lately that he isn’t as into it as he once was, and as much as I celebrate his growing independence, it makes me sad. DH put DS to bed a few nights ago, and I realized DS hadn’t come to me for his nighttime nurse….so I went in a few hours later and nursed him. I’m sad for this phase to end, but I know it will be inevitable and only hope that my nursing relationship with my next baby will be so fulfilling.

I breastfed my older daughter for 14 months. She only breastfed and refused a lot of food. She had terrible separation anxiety and wanted to be with me all the time. I wish I would have let her go longer, instead of listening to others and quitting cold turkey.

My younger daughter was breastfed until she was 12 months old. She weaned herself. We were just down to the nighttime nursing and on the night of her 1st birthday she was done. It was so bittersweet, but I followed her ques.

I am a big supporter of breastfeeding as well! I have six children, all whom have nursed.
1st–Only nursed for about a week. I was young and didn’t have the support I needed to continue.
2nd–about 5 months…also still no support.
3rd–about 3 months. He was in the hospital for a week when he was 2 months old and my milk dwindled.
4th–3 years. Made my baby quit nursing because I was pregnant with baby #5 :-( I wish I would have not made her quit.
5th–still nursing at 3 yrs 3 months.
6th–still nursing at 1 yr 3 months.

Yes, I am tandem nursing! This is very funny at times, but they are growing a close relationship with each other!

When I was pregnant with baby #3, I moved to a rural community that didn’t have a hospital that delivered babies! The closest one was an hour away. This made us seek out other options and found a midwife that would deliver at her office in our town. When baby #4 came, we had a midwife that would deliver at home. Yay! The midwife didn’t make it in time for the birth (at another birth at the time!), so this left my brave husband to deliver our healthy baby!! By this time, when baby #5 arrived, we were pros at this and decided to deliver at home with hubby delivering…went smooth! This was the case with baby #6 as well! We used to have faith in doctors and medicine, but we decided to live life more naturally and put our faith in our loving Father. My babies co-sleep with us, we extend breastfeeding, we home educate…

My Bug is 15 months and we are still breastfeeding. I have no idea when we will stop. I have to be honest, I have moments when I wish she would give up the breast and move on but I will keep on doing it as long as it is right for her. I have no idea when that will be. One thing I do know for sure is that I don’t care what anyone thinks of my breastfeeding my child.

I nursed 6 so far,
1st till she was about 6 months old, I think a Nursing strike I took for Weaning (I was only 18 and had no clue)
2nd I nursed for only around 6 weeks or so, I dont know why we stopped, even being in the UK I really didnt have any BF support of any kind and thought the only option was to quit,
3rd till around 6 months again but I had a forceful letdown and she hated it!!. I pumped from around 7 weeks till she was 6 months old and the Breast pump broke!
4th till he was 11 months.. don’t remember why
5th till he was 14 months old, I went into hospital with an appendicitis (burst), and was in there around a week, he didn’t want to nurse when I got home. I also found out that I was pregnant with #6 while I was in there!!
6th 9 months old and still going strong, no plans to quit till he wants to (hopefully around 2)
